He is a performer on flute, piccolo, euphonium and trombone in symphonies, jazz bands, wind ensembles, trombone ensembles, brass bands, pit orchestras, jazz combos, community bands and a back-up performer for various national, and internationally known artists. Mr. Simons taught in the Natrona County School District, the Campbell County School District, Laramie County School District 1, the University of Wyoming as an adjunct Low Brass Instructor, was an Assistant Conductor of the Laramie Community Band, a Guest Conductor of the Cheyenne Civic Concert Band, and Director of the UW Pep Band.
As their Pep Band Director, the Pep Band received the Admiral Land Award 1987. He also was an adjunct at Laramie County Community College as Jazz Band Director and Woodwind methods instructor. Nick was selected as a Wyoming State FFA Band Director, in 1994 was the Outstanding Fine Arts Educator in Gillette, a 2014 Nominee for the Grammy’s Music Educator Award, and was recently the 2017 Outstanding Wyoming Jazz Educator.
Mr. Simons has organized and performs with a Jazz Sextet, and recently assisted in forming the Cheyenne Brass Ensemble. Nick has been affiliated with the Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps as a Brass Instructor, and the Assistant Director of the Corps. Mr. Simons is a member of NAFME, WMEA, NEA, JEN, WJE and was President of the Wyoming Jazz Educators, the WMEA Jazz Chair Representative, Retirement Chair, and Northeast District President. He was the founder of the WJE Summer Jazz Outreach Program. Nick is now employed at Wyomusic Shop in Cheyenne as a repair technician and sales.
Nick Simons has been a guest clinician, conductor, adjudicator and is now a retired instrumental music educator of 45 years in the Tri-State area. He has taught elementary through college level students, and obtained a Bachelor of Music Education and a Master of Arts with Emphasis in Music Education from the University of Wyoming.
