Jazz Band I - Dr. John Adler
Trumpeter, Composer, and Educator John Adler is based in Windsor, Colorado. Dr. Adler has an established national reputation as a performer, educator, and composer of trumpet music in various mediums. His diverse performance resume includes recitals, masterclasses, and performances in classical and jazz settings all across the country including conferences of the International Trumpet Guild (ITG) and College Music Society.
Dr. Adler has performed with orchestras and chamber groups all across Colorado and Wyoming. This includes performances with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, the Colorado Ballet, Opera Colorado, and guest principal trumpet appearances with the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra, Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra, Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra, Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra, and chamber music performances with the Colorado Symphony Brass, the Boulder Brass, the Boulder Brass Quintet, the Denver Brass, and the Greeley Philharmonic Brass. Prior to moving to Colorado, he performed with the symphony orchestras of Eugene, Miami, and Roanoke, as well as the Reno Philharmonic, the Palm Beach Pops, and Opera Roanoke.
His jazz/commercial experience includes performances with touring Broadway shows, and with the Denver Municipal Jazz Band, the Colorado Jazz Repertory Orchestra, the Jaco Pastorious Big Band, the University of Miami Concert Jazz Band, and jazz chamber groups Seven Minus and the John Adler Trio.
John holds a D.M.A. in trumpet performance at the University of Miami, a MM from the University of Oregon, and a BM from the University of Nevada-Reno. John’s primary teachers/mentors include Craig Morris, Steve Owen, Larry Engstrom, Alex Norris, Whit Sidener, George Recker, and James Miley. His compositional output includes works for various jazz settings, trumpet ensembles, and a recently completed Voyages, a Concerto for Trumpet and Electronics with Wind Ensemble. Dr. Adler’s compositions and arrangements have been performed at multiple National Trumpet Competitions and ITG conferences.

A graduate of The University of Northern Colorado and Chicago College of the Performing Arts at Roosevelt University, Paul has been active as a choral/vocal jazz clinician as well as a pianist in Recital Performances, All State Choir/All State Jazz Choir Performances, Jazz Ensembles, Reading Sessions, Recording projects and Music theatre pits from Colorado to Illinois and New York. Some Music Director highlights include CO Premier productions of RENT, Next To Normal, Memphis, Fun Home, Motones vs. Jerseys, A Christmas Story and many others.
Before teaching choir at Ponderosa High School, CU Boulder Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Rocky Mountain High School (GRAMMY Signature High School) and Windsor High School, Paul served as Assistant Director of Purdue Musical Organizations and Vocal Percussionist for CO Acappella group Groove Society. Paul has had the opportunity to work with artists such as: Anton Armstrong, Mandy Harvey, Patricia Barber, Laurence Hobgood, Judy Kaye, Janine DiVita, Terrence Mann, Stephanie J. Block, Roger Treece, Kate McGarry, Judy Niemack and Ben Folds.
Andy Wheelock is a Drummer, Percussionist, Composer, and Educator. Wheelock is an active performer and in addition to performing regularly around the Front Range, he also tours internationally and has performed in Japan, Korea, Europe, and South America.
He is a founding member of the WHEE3TRIO, the Live Edge Trio, KEWO, and can be heard playing regularly with the Gonzalo Teppa Quintet, Ben Markley, New Stream Brass Ensemble, the University of Wyoming Jazz Faculty, and the Cheyenne Symphony. Wheelock has had the honor of sharing the stage with Bill O’Connell, Steve Nelson, Adam Birnbaum, Henry Linarez, Terrel Stafford, Ernie Watts, Craig Handy, Jorge Alabe, SK Kakraba, Jorge Glem, Bobby Shew, Chuchito Valdés, Joel Frahm, Bob Bowman, Ivan Trevino, and William Moersch.
As a composer and arranger, Wheelock writes regularly for his own recording projects as well as big bands, percussion ensembles, Samba Bateria’s, and Pan-Afro-Latin Ensembles. His second record as a leader with the WHEE3TRIO received outstanding reviews including “a joyfully hypnotic listening experience” by Dan McClenaghan at All About Jazz.
As a clinician and adjudicator, Wheelock has been a guest artist at Boise State, Ohio State University, Central Michigan University, Friends University, Colorado Mesa University, Columbus State University, Interlochen School for the Arts, Washburn, Hope College, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Wichita State, Casper College, and the University of Illinois.
Wheelock currently serves as the Director of Jazz Studies and Percussion area coordinator at the University of Wyoming where he directs the Wyoming Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combos, Samba Bateria, Pan-Afro-Latin Drumming group, and the UWYO Percussion Ensemble.

Jazz Band II - Andy Wheelock
David von Kampen (b. 1986) is a composer from Lincoln, Nebraska. David’s creative work spans a wide variety of genres and styles, including jazz, choral music, hymnody and liturgy, solo voice, chamber music, and musical theater. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Kansas, and Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees from the University of Nebraska. He has studied composition with James Barnes, Dan Gailey, Forrest Pierce, Eric Richards, and Randall Snyder.
David is a six-time Downbeat Award winner in graduate-level jazz writing categories, a three-time winner of the Vancouver Chamber Choir Young Composers Competition, and was named the MTNA Distinguished Composer of the Year for his song cycle "Under the Silver and Home Again." He has been among ten winners of the ORTUS International New Music Competition, the recipient of an ASCAP Young Jazz Composer award, winner of the San Francisco Choral Artists New Voices Project, winner of the National Band Association’s Young Jazz Composers Competition, and received Honorable Mention in the New York Youth Symphony First Music Commissions. Puddin’ and the Grumble, David’s original musical with playwright Becky Boesen, was one of seven finalists for the Richard Rodgers award.
David has over 80 choral and instrumental compositions and arrangements published with Walton Music, G. Schirmer, Hal Leonard, Concordia Publishing House, Pavane Publishing, UNC Jazz Press, Graphite, MusicSpoke, and others. His music has been performed by the Aeolians, KHORIKOS Vocal Ensemble, the L.A. Choral Lab, KC VITAs Chamber Choir, the Taiwan Youth Festival Chorus, San Francisco Choral Artists, the U.S. Army Blues Jazz Ensemble, the Vancouver Chamber Choir, and by collegiate, all-state, high school, and church ensembles throughout the United States and internationally.
David is a lecturer of music theory and literature at the University of Nebraska, where he teaches a variety of music courses and directs the award-winning UNL Jazz Singers. He also serves as Music Coordinator for Sanctuary Worship at Christ Lutheran Church in Lincoln. David is a member of ASCAP, the Jazz Education Network, and the American Choral Directors Association. He is active as a conductor and pianist, and as a clinician for vocal and instrumental ensembles. He lives in Lincoln with his wife Mollie and three daughters.
